When first starting this blog, I wasn’t quite sure what topics I would be covering. There was just a basic need to write something, keeping my momentum moving forward. I didn’t want it to become a trite personal blog covered in YouTube links, one line missives or other extraneous crap. I didn’t want to go the reviewer route, criticizing books, music or films according to my own arbitrary sense of quality. The goal was to write things worth reading, staying away from fluff or empty headed insights.
Looking over what’s been written, I see a lot of posts about writing. I’m not a published writer so what the hell am I doing chatting about process and technique? It could be, as they say, “you don’t know how well you understand something until you teach it to others”. In trying to relay the little I know, maybe I’m cementing the knowledge in my own head? It could also be a desire to share the processes I’m going through, giving an inside peek to the trials and tribulations.
Either reason could be valid, but there’s more to it. These posts are things that have been bouncing around my head for so long yet I’ve never formulated them into words. With the field I’m in, literary discussions don’t tend to occur unless it’s about a new book, but even then they fail to go into any detail. No conversations about style, voice, character motivations, narrative devices, thematic choices or really anything that scratches below the surface. Within these circles I’ve only encountered consumers not creators. I guess this blog is my message in a bottle, floating along with the zeros and ones of the information superhighway, hoping to find kindred spirits.
I would like to talk a little more about what I’m working on, but old school superstitions are making me keep them close to the chest. I can say that hopefully I’ll have something on this site before end of May that’ll be more writerly and less bloggy. As always, thanks for reading.
